Smoothies

{Scroll on down for quick access to some of our favorites!}

Juices and smoothies offer a great opportunity to supercharge nutritional intake in recipes that are easy, convenient, and super-portable!  These babies are packing loads of raw nutrients and enzymes!   Oooohhh!  The Nutrients!

There are really so many combinations out there that smoothie recipes are nearly endless!  I like to make any combination of smoothie with a general formula of fruit + nut/seed milk or water + good fats + greens + any other benefit booster that comes to mind + honey or stevia (if desired to further sweeten) + ice.

A blender should always be loaded with the softest and wettest ingredients on the bottom.  When making things that take a little longer to get smooth, I like to reserve the ice until it reaches a desired consistency.

Do note that even high-speed blenders can perform less than optimally when you have them overloaded.

One key tip:  As with most any other kind of recipe, it all starts with good ingredients. Using ripe ingredients can make the difference between “Wow!” and “um, well…”  This is especially so where you’re counting on the flavor of the fruit to mask, counter or balance out the taste of greens!

On a final note, some of these recipes makes some BIG smoothies so you have plenty to share with the family.  If you find that it’s more than you’ll consume in one sitting, fret not.  While smoothies are best consumed fresh as blending can speed oxidation, most smoothies can handle 2-3 days in the refrigerator.

Though, I will warn you:  Blueberry smoothies should be consumed immediately!  All that pectin can make them congeal and get a funky texture when left to sit, chilled or otherwise.  If this happens to yours, note, they can be re-blended but don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Now, that you’ve got it...  let’s head to the kitchen and start rockin’ these things out!
